Many times when I’m working at the store, y’all ask about the story of The Dressing Space! While I know some of it, I definitely don’t know everything. So, I figured why not ask the person who would know it all- Madison! I sat down with her and asked her some questions about the store and such, hoping to give y’all some more insight on where we come from and why we do what we do!
- Can you tell us a little about DSB and its story?
Madison: "I think it was around July 2015 that I first figured out that I wanted to open a Boutique. I had worked for Gone Gorgeous in Yulee in 2013 through 2014 and LOVED it. I always knew I wanted my own store, but it was summer of 2015 that I decided to actually open one because I was really unsure of my current job, and where that was headed. I took the leap and started DSB just online in October of 2015. We started with only about $2500 for the website and initial inventory purchase. There were so many days I never thought we would make it as I was still working my other job 9-5. I think deep down I knew that I needed to spend more time on DSB, but I could not afford to leave my job because the store wasn’t generating enough sales yet. It was getting hard to continue purchasing inventory on credit cards to keep the store fresh, but we kept going in a belief that we would make it! It was in March of 2017 that DSB really took off when we connected with Ann, the owner Gone Gorgeous in Yulee, about potentially buying her brick & mortar location. We ended up finding a way to purchase her location and re-branded it as the Dressing Space Boutique! Having a physical location that people knew of as a boutique allowed me to leave my other job and focus solely on running the store – It was the greatest decision and biggest blessing I could have ever dreamed of! The first year was really hard as we worked to get our feet underneath us and run a new business. But we just continued working hard through social media, and providing the best customer service and outfit styling that we could and thanks to our amazing customers, we got through that initial phase! Now, we are looking to continue to expand our online presence, what we offer in the store and hopefully one day build out our own unique physical location that reflects DSB and our dreams! Every day, I pinch myself about DSB and that I get to run the store and interact with amazing people… It is all because of our customers and I’m just so so grateful that people choose to come into DSB because I know there are so many other options. So, thank you for all your support in helping us grow!!!"
What does a typical day look like for you at DSB?
Madison: "When owning a boutique, there is never a dull day! There is always something to do- whether it is online orders, ordering inventory, doing finances, managing our girls, or our social media. I feel like each day I am running around like a crazy person! I think social media and running the online store is a majority of each day for me – Instagram Stories, posts, videos, photoshoots for new styles, putting them up on the website… That is where a majority of my time is spent! Definitely the best part of each day is interacting with and helping each customer when they come in the store, or engaging with our amazing ladies on Instagram & Facebook."
What was your inspiration for the Boutique?
Madison: "I had worked for Gone Gorgeous in Yulee before starting DSB, and I really loved helping women find outfits and introduce them to different styles and fashion trends. So, I knew I loved ordering inventory and thought I had pretty good taste in styles."
Where did the name Dressing Space Boutique come from?
Madison: "This is actually pretty funny… When we were coming up with the initial idea for the store, we wanted to have multiple models of various body sizes wearing the same outfit to help online shoppers with fit. So, we called it The Dressing Space Boutique” as kind of like a play off of a “dressing room,” and a place to try on clothes, but only online. Funny enough, having multiple models for each outfit was extremely hard to do especially as we were just starting out, but we still love the name as its really unique and different and has a funny story!"
What’s your favorite part of owning a boutique?
Madison: "Hands down, my favorite part about owning DSB is helping ladies find that perfect outfit for whatever occasion they are looking for. It’s so much fun to help pair, mix & match and then to see the confidence and joy a new outfit can bring someone. It’s definitely so much fun to see someone find something they love and then watch their confidence soar! When there are tough days, it can all turn around when I see the smile on someone’s face as they look at their new outfit in our mirror. It’s those moments that really drive me, and I’m so grateful to each customer that gives us the opportunity to help them!"
How do you pick what inventory you want?
Madison: This has definitely changed over the years as I have owned DSB. I would say now, I always try and pair unique outfits together. I love fun patterns and unique styles that you cant find in other stores. I always try and stay on top of any trends out there, so I definitely order based on this. One of the things we always try and do is bring in new arrivals each week. I know we’ll never compete with Target, Kohl’s, Amazon or such, so I really try and have something new each and every week, and pair full outfits together! This allows us to pretty versatile in what is coming in the store, and makes for a new experience anytime you come in!
What do you like to do on your days off?
Madison: "When I’m not at DSB, I definitely just enjoy lounging and relaxing at the pool or the beach with a drink in my hand!"
What’s something most people don’t know about you?
Madison:" I actually was really nervous and anxious about being on camera when we took over the brick & mortar in April 2017. For the longest time, I think like almost a year, I would only ever be behind the camera and had other girls be on camera. All of our amazing customers and team members helped me become more and more confident, and even though I still get a little nervous to be on camera, it’s so much easier thanks to y'all!"
What’s your go-to outfit?
Madison: "I think my go-to casual outfit is definitely a pair of distressed denim shorts and a graphic tee. When I want to get a little more dressed up, I’ve started to like rompers more and more. A fun fact is that until last year, I had never worn a romper!"
Dunkin’ or Starbucks?
Madison: "Definitely Starbucks! Their app is dangerous lol"
I hope y’all enjoyed reading Madison and DSB’s story as much as I loved asking her about it! Anyone who’s ever been around her knows DSB is her passion, and that’s one of the reasons I love working here, and one of the things that make this store my favorite! (I may be a little biased, but it’s the truth!)

Our downtown shoots never fail to be fun. We’re always grabbing coffee as a prop, scrolling through Pinterest to find new poses, and laughing to get that perfect “candid.”
Here’s that candid I was talking about earlier! There’s no telling what we were laughing about in this picture. Funny story about this photoshoot though- we wanted so badly to do a fall inspired photoshoot… but it was “Florida fall.” (you know, the one where it’s 80 degrees in November) So regardless of the temperature, we still did the shoot.
The looks we got from people in shorts and tank tops while walking past them in our sweaters were hilarious!
